Destinations - Benidorm

"Benidorm has been a firm favourite of mine for many years"

Kate from our Head Office tells us in her own words about her beach break to Benidorm.

Words: Kate Bowen, The Travel House Head Office

Where do I start with Benidorm? Firstly, it has been made more popular by the TV show which honestly does mirror the resort to the very last detail. That said, this is not meant to deter you but to entice you.

Benidorm is a year round destination meaning the weather still remains good in winter months and there is a great atmosphere in resort regardless of when you travel. Getting there is incredibly easy with flight options from all over the UK including Cardiff and Bristol. The short transfer time of approximately 45 minutes from Alicante Airport to Benidorm allows to get to your hotel quickly and to start enjoying your holiday immediately.

There are endless options for accommodation in Benidorm, however it is important to be aware that as it is such a large resort it is important to be in the right location to make the most of your holiday. Benidorm is located on a long stretch of beach starting in the old town at Poniente Beach and sweeping around to the new town onto Levante Beach. The resort is divided from old to new by the Benidorm Lido, often referred to as the balcony of the Mediterranean. This is a beautiful lido that is located on a cliff overlooking the sea creating some perfect photo opportunities day or night.

Olympic Park I have had the pleasure of visiting the Sol Pelicanos and Sol Ocas Hotel in the new town where the popular TV series Benidorm is filmed. These hotels are part of the Melia chain which are well known for quality and service. Both hotels are connected and have something to offer all customer types. There is a fantastic kids club with Flintstones theme as well as evening entertainment for all age groups. The food is exceptional here, I was very impressed with the range and quality of food available in the buffet restaurant. On my most recent trip to Benidorm as part of The Travel House annual conference I was lucky enough to stay at the Sol Melia hotel. This hotel is located on the outskirts of the new town but still very close to all amenities and within walking distance of the centre. The hotel has a spa, an indoor and outdoor pool, two bars and a large restaurant that caters for all customer's needs. The hotel is modern and spacious and the staff are friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend a stay here for a relaxed break. If you are a fan of the TV show you may even run into the main characters as the studios they film in are just a stone's throw away.

There is a distinct difference between the old and new town which makes Benidorm an ideal choice for a holiday where you can experience different evenings out. The new town is vibrant with an endless choice of bars, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. The old town has a traditional Spanish feel with many small bars and restaurants dotted along the beautiful alleyways. Here you will find the locals enjoying an evening out as well as some fantastic tapas!

Benidorm Tourist Office is located near Benidorm Lido where there are friendly staff to assist with recommendations on anything you will need from the local chemist to a family day out. Valencia and Barcelona are both easily reached from Benidorm, with rail and coach tickets at reasonable prices.

Olympic Park There are too many entertainment venues to mention in Benidorm but I couldn't not mention the Benidorm Palace. Here you will find evening shows for all the family including magicians, dancing and circus style acts. There is an option to include food and even some drinks. A night out here is not to be missed!

I cannot recommend the destination enough but don't just take my word for it, go and experience it for yourself.
